Colombian artist in Marseille

My evolution as an artist has been strongly influenced by my work as an anthropologist, during which I got close to the crafts of the indigenous communities of the Amazon. The textile work attracted me especially and it impelled me to a search of the possibilities of implementing this craft with an artistic perspective. During my studies of textile art in Barcelona I found, progressively, a space of expression in weaving.

I use techniques of both modern tapestry and classic fabric making as well as collage to create abstract compositions that seek balance through organic textures. The visual experience in front of my pieces serches to evoke tactile sensations and echo natural surfaces such as mosses, corals, skins or lichens.

The materials play a central role in my creations. Most of them are of animal origin such as silk, vegetable like cotton or pine or mineral like ceramics. The immense plastic possibilities of these natural materials are often a starting point for a piece. Each material has its own essence and an aesthetic potential to be discovered through experimentation. In the same way, in my compositions I seek to emphasize the contrast between the natural origin of materials in their raw state and the human made composition achieved through a manual manipulation.

Being the materials one of the drivers in my work, they also have a great influence on the techniques I use. In the most recent compositions I have moved a little away from the loom to search the possibilities of collage following the same principles of design (organic textures, repetitive structures and search for textile sensations).

My path is to evolve with each work, each composition, both in the aesthetic as in the espression field. Each piece is a door that opens a new world of possibilities.
